Cassie and Sky's Bread and Butter Pudding
(adapted from this recipe)

you will need
1 baking pan, about 10"x10"x2"
1 stick butter, soft enough to spread
10 slices bread, cut diagonally across
Fruit filling of your choice! We used half of a small jar of strawberry jelly.
1/4 tsp grated nutmeg + 1/4 tsp cinnamon + sugar to sprinkle with
1 saucepan, large enough to hold...
12 fl oz/350 ml milk + 2 fl oz/50 ml heavy cream + 2 large eggs (bite me, they don't have to be free-range unless you prefer that) + 1 oz/25 g sugar + 1 tsp vanilla extract
1 bowl for beating your eggs, vanilla, and sugar
let's do this
1. Preheat oven to 355 degrees F/180 C/whatever Gas 4 is.
2. Grease the pan with part of a stick of butter. Yeah, just unwrap it and start smearing.
3. Butter 3 slices of bread, cut them into triangles, and put them on the bottom of the pan. Add filling of choice and sprinkle with a bit of nutmeg and cinnamon.
4. Repeat step 3.
5. Butter your last 3 slices of bread, cut them into triangles and put them on top of this whole thing. DO NOT PUT FILLING HERE.
6. Gently warm milk + cream in saucepan. Do not boil this mixture.
7. Crack your eggs into your bowl, add the sugar and vanilla extract, and beat that mix until it's light, airy, and pale.
8. Pour your warm milk and cream SLOWLY into the egg stuff, stirring the whole time.
9. Pour your eggy-milky mixture over the bread. Push on the bread to make sure everything soaks together. Trust me, this is going to be great. Sprinkle some of the cinnamon, nutmeg, and sugar over the top.
10. Bake that sucker for 40 minutes or so. The surface has to brown, the pudding has to rise, and the egg has to set.
11. Eat yourself stupid.
Realistically, will serve ten people, one per slice of bread. If you're me, you'll serve it for dessert on your birthday, having pigged out on pasta, be too damn full to enjoy it, and save it for tomorrow. Ten minutes under foil in the oven at 350 will get you leftovers. :)
