Venting the ol' rage...

Some idiotic bint in the Discworld category on ff.n wrote a fic called "Adding Daddy" about Vimes and the impending birth of his child. That's all very well and good, but she started off painting Vimes as a childfree man, one that was rather uncertain about his ability to be a decent father at all. Then at the end of the fic, what does she do? Just has him shrug and say "Oh well, I'll just have to learn to adjust." WTF? The Vimes she presents to us (as opposed to Pratchett's Vimes, which wouldn't make a much better father) obviously isn't ready to be a parent at all, yet she just has him calmly accepting this. There's not a sequel to this, but I have a feeling that if she wrote one, she'd probably have him quitting the Watch to be a stay-at-home father. Nothing wrong with that in general, but for Vimes, it doesn't sit right. Make up your fucking mind! Is he happy about this or not? Would they end up calling the Ankh-Morporkean Child Protective Services in on this man for being an unfit parent, were Sybil to suddenly not be there anymore? Would he leave his child to be raised by nannies? Would he even adjust his work schedule so that he could see his child?

Gah. Don't even get me started on how illogical it is that Sybil should even be pregnant. Here I thought they were a decent CF couple. I'm just disappointed, that's all. Well, that and madly curious as to what's next in the series. One never knows what sort of plot twist will pop up, and that's one of the things that's keeping me reading. No use going back to the beginning and pretending this isn't going to happen. I already know.

*shakes head* So many great fictional role models turn around and sprog on me as soon as I look away - Horatio Hornblower, Dana Scully, the Lioness Alanna, even Sailor Moon is a mommy in some other dimension. Where are the childfree characters? I've read maybe one series that features them. I guess that's what got me really upset - there aren't any good guys left in fictional universes that can manage not to reproduce. No wonder I end up admiring the villains or the ones with sort of shady backgrounds (like Havelock Vetinari, to keep this in one fandom).

I'm fucked, is all. Utterly fucked.
