The topic at hand, of course, being the kind of story that you can simply lose yourself in. I've found three so far - all epics, all the best of their kind in their fandoms, all featuring something unique to said fandom.
The first one I remember reading was The First Duty, by Sue (from The Android's Dungeon) and friend. The unique thing about this fic is not only its size (22 sizable chapters) but its very existence. There are no other Colditz fics out there, at least on the web. The First Duty centers around the lives of Dick Player and Philip Carrington, two prisoners of Colditz, a POW camp during WWII. Carrington and Player fall in love during their time there. After they both escape, Carrington is recaptured but Player is not. Later, news comes through that Player has died, and Carrington must go on from there. 'Tis an excellent story with an amazing ending.
Next on the list is Provocateur, by Alex. It's a crossover - The Bounty meets Scarlet and Black - with lots and lots of slashiness. Basically, it's Churchill/Sorel slash using the characters as portrayed by Liam Neeson and Ewan McGregor in the respective films. Being a fan of both, you can imagine why I'd fall in love with this epic! At 47 chapters, it took some time to read, but I -was- reading them as they were written, so maybe that was part of the time delay. ;-) Having recently seen The Bounty made me want to reread this, so that's on my To Do list.
The third in this triumvirate happens to be The Saga of Christian Caron, at married.frenchboys.net. Me likes muchly. *nodnod* Seriously, Chantal's the one Mary Sue I've actually liked. Maybe she's not even an MS, just a well done original character, but... this is one of my all-time favorites. The Enjolras/Grantaire-ness and the Ioan Gruffudd involvement doesn't hurt, either. :0) Go read. Now.
Even as I type this, I've found yet another long!fic, "Orestes: 1832," which I will have to come back for later. *sigh*
