High fashion and postmodernism:
Feb. 14th, 2011 08:30 pmTwo things I will never quite understand.
Both seem to take themselves hyper-seriously--or is the joke on the rest of us plebes? By the looks of Leandra Medine's report on New York Fashion Week, I suspect the latter. (The Man Repeller ought to be able to spot the absurdity from a million miles away.) I mean, did you watch the red carpet before the Grammys? You kind of expect Lady Gaga to show up in a giant egg, but where was the rest of J.Lo's dress?* And Katy Perry... well, I did not expect much of Katy Perry, so I couldn't be too disappointed.
Combs and Freedman** are throwing around "postmodern" like it's gone out of style in Narrative Therapy, and I am sitting here, scratching my head, trying to piece together what in seven hells is going on, because none of my courses up 'til, well, now have even mentioned the term. Wikipedia is not much help: "Postmodernism is a movement away from the viewpoint of modernism." Uh... Then it goes on to add "More specifically it is a tendency in contemporary culture characterized by the problematization of objective truth and inherent suspicion towards global cultural narrative or meta-narrative." Okay! Now I'm getting somewhere. So if modernism is black and white, postmodernism is shades of grey. I will happily inhabit the grey spaces in the world. Beyond that, I am happy not knowing much else. Working definitions, people! I can has 'em!
Now, to put my nose to the grindstone and finish making notes on... oh, God, at least three out of eleven chapters of the Winton and Mara. Pray for me if you're the prayin' kind.
* Also, I feel bad for Jennifer Hudson's boobs. Jesus, just let 'em breathe already.
** Jill, not Sally. I know, I Googled the wrong one, too.
